During a period of ten weeks, a diverse cohort of ten students will work full-time on a research project with their faculty mentors and graduate advisors, participate in professional development activities, and attend social events based on their interests. The summer experience will culminate with the students submitting their final reports and participate in a technical presentation at the VT Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) Undergraduate Research Symposium during the final week of the program.

Program Dates

May 24 - July 30, 2021 (ten weeks) - Pending funding from NSF


Participants will be provided with double-occupancy, air-conditioned housing in Virginia Tech dormatories with a meal plan consisting of 19-meals per week in the campus dining hall (brunch service is offered on Saturday and Sundays during the summer).

Participants will also recieve a stipend of $5,000 for the ten week program, $500 travel funding to-and-from Blacksburg, VA, health insurance, gym access for health and wellness, library, and Wi-Fi internet access.


  • Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.8
  • Students must be enrolled as an undergraduate in an accredited college or university and have at least one semester of undergraduate student remaining after completion of the summer program.
  • Students must be U.S. citiziens or permanent residents only.
  • Students from underrepresented ethnic and cultural backgrounds, including students from HCBUs, women, and first-generation college students are especially encouraged to apply. 
  • No prior research experience is required.
