Calendar and Important Dates
The application period for Summer 2021 REU Program on November 15, 2020.
February 12, 2021: Deadline for recieving completed applications submitted through the online form.
February 26, 2021: Review of the completed application packages by REU faculty, diversity leads, and staff. Incomplete appliations will not be reviewed.
March 12, 2021: Selected participants will be sent offer letters by email. Students not selected placed on a wait-list until all offers have been accepted or declined.
March 26, 2021: Deadline for selected participants to accept or decline the offer to participate in the program.
April 9, 2021: All REU applicants not selected for the program will be notified.
Early-April 2021: Information packets will be mailed to students in early April. These will describe travel to Blacksburg, housing and meal plans, REU program goals and calendar of events, and regional tourist attractions
Late-April 2021: Faculty mentors will be asked to contact their students to schedule an informal kick-off meeting and send a project description and background literature so they can familiarize themselves with their project.
Late-April 2021: Stipend and travel funding arrangements will be made. Room assignments in the residence halls.
May 1, 2021: Deadline for Go/No-Go decision on the Summer 2021 REU based on COVID-19 regulations imposed by Virginia Tech and local, state, and national health guidelines. See COVID-19 planning.
May 2021: Any outstanding details will be finalized in May, and the PIs will be readily available throughout the year to answer student questions by phone or email.
May 23, 2021: Participants move into VT residence hall.
May 24, 2021: First day of REU Site! Virginia Tech orientation. REU Site Overview. Meet faculty advisors and research teams. Entry interview with PIs.
Typical Week: During a given week, students will perform research in their respective labs from Monday through Friday, with professional development activities on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Social activities are generally planned for Friday afternoons and over the weekend.
July 29, 2021: Participate in Undergraduate Research Symposium (tentative).
July 30, 2021: Last day of the REU site and exit interviews with PIs.
